Back to Basics: Alaska’s Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge Vacations

Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge, Alaska

If you truly want to go off the grid and get back to basics, then consider a holiday at Alaska’s Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge.

Regarded as one of North America’s Top 10 Eco-Resorts, Sadie Cove Wilderness lodge is only accessible by boat, floatplane or helicopter and hosts just a handful of overnight guests. However, if you have a party of eight or more, you can have the lodge entirely to yourselves.

The lodge was built by hand from local driftwood, 35 years ago by owner Keith Iverson, and it is run entirely on alternative energy (hydro and wind power).  Organic produce is grown on the lodge grounds and served in the dining room, and the lodge is renowned for its fresh Alaskan fish and seafood. As an added bonus, all meals are included in the cost of your stay.

Groceries are brought in from the town of Homer – 10 miles by boat and, rather than make separate trips in the lodge boat for every little need, groceries are put on the water taxi when guests are coming to the lodge – a seafarer’s form of car-pooling.

Take a hike into Kachemak Bay State Park, or head for the waters for a kayaking trip or spend the day fishing. If you’re not interested in being that active, spend your time in the log cabin sauna or the plunge pool.  Come evening, gather in the dining room with other guests to share your adventures of the day.

If you stay here, you will literally leave your mark, as owners Keith and Randi offset some of the carbon emissions from your resulting travel by planting one new tree in Alaska for every guest that visits the lodge.
